This is an ideal career for creative thinkers. A film and television producer plans and manages both the technical and artistic streams of the film or TV production process. You supervise the budget, recruitment of staff, script development and coordination of sets, locations and equipment. In many ways a producer is like the Managing Director of a company.
Becoming a Producer takes a lot of dedication and a balanced mix of commercial and interpersonal skills. You need to possess knowledge of film, television and business. Its a rewarding career that satisfies your inner most creative needs. In order to land a professional experience in studio production, you will have to prove that you can manage a high volume of work creatively. The best way to prove this exposure is to find work experience as a production assistant. If you are unable to land a job in this industry right now, another route is through community colleges or technical schools that may be in your neighborhood. Seek to enroll in extension coursework in this field.
You will need to have some experience in television production for network TV. Your responsibilities in this role may include selecting the most compelling video for broadcast, managing and coordinating field tapes, transcribing tapes, or running scripts.
The best way to get involved in production for network TV is to consider reaching out to people you know in this industry. It is extremely difficult to enter this field so you should spread your network wide: reach out to all mentors, former bosses, sorority/fraternity members, friends, alumni, neighbors, etc. Getting your foot in the door is the key and to do so, all you need is to find the one or two person/people whom you may know. Dont be afraid to check your schools alumni database as well. There may be people from your alma mater who are now in this field and are willing to help you get your start there as well.
